Your Visit
Before your first visit a phone consultation may be necessary to determine your needs. If you have more complex needs or feel anxious about the process an initial consultation can be arranged.
First visit (up to 3 hours long)
I will determine your iris and pupil size and a replica of your iris will be hand painted from life. An impression will be taken to determine the contours of your eye socket using alginate. Alginate is a material made of agar-agar and is one of the safest ways to make moulds and castings of the human eye socket.
I will then make a polished wax model of your future prosthesis. It will be inserted and modified to determine comfort, primary gaze, proper lid relationship, and maximum movement.
The colour of your sclera (white) will be determined and the veining of the sclera.
I will take a photograph of your own eye as a reference so that during manufacturing I can add all those little patterns and details that makes you eye unique.
This appointment will be split into two shorter appointments if a very thin cosmetic shell is required as a fuller eye will need some recovery time after the impression is taken and a moulded acrylic shape is used for the fitting which required a longer processing time than the wax shape. If a patient would prefer this appointment can be split into two shorter appointments for the standard fitting as well.
Final fitting (1 hour)
Your prosthesis will be inserted, and final adjustments will be made.
If slight alterations need to be made to the angle or the prosthesis needs to be made a little smaller this can be carried out during this appointment. If the prosthesis needs to be made larger or the artwork needs to be altered a further appointment would be arranged
I will make sure you know how to handle and care for your new prosthesis, and I’ll always be available if you have any questions or need any further adjustments once you get home.
Follow-up appointments (30 minutes)
Around 6 weeks after your final fitting after you’ve gotten used to wearing your prosthesis you may feel that adjustments may be needed as you will have seen it in different lighting, and you’ll have noticed anything that doesn’t feel right by this time.
You should come in every year to have your prosthetic examined and polished.
